Jefferson Rock sits on a rocky ledge above the town of Harpers Ferry, where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet and cut through the Blue Ridge. Jefferson described this gap in his *Notes on the State of Virginia* (1785) as one of the most stupendous scenes in nature, worth a voyage across the Atlantic to see. The overlook takes its name from that praise, and it later became a stop on the Appalachian Trail. In a view like this one, the viewer can see why the spot drew the attention of a writer who had spent so much time thinking about the young nation's land.
