Known professionally as Mme. Nordica, the soprano Lillian Nordica (born Lillian Norton in Farmington, Maine) was one of the most celebrated American singers of her era. She built her reputation in Europe before returning to triumph at the Metropolitan Opera, where she was admired in Wagnerian roles. The record's title comes from caption information supplied by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, so the name is worth checking against other sources. The glass negative format also reflects the studio and news practices of the early twentieth century.
