Titled "Maternal Cares," this color reproduction takes up a theme that Maud Humphrey returned to often in the 1890s. Humphrey, an American illustrator, built a following with sentimental images of children and mothers that circulated widely in books, magazines and greeting cards. The copyright notice in the name of Frederick A. Stokes Co., a New York publisher that issued Humphrey's work in book form, shows how her watercolors moved from the artist's hand into mass print. The record's subject tags are only "Children" and "Women," so the picture's details are best read directly from the image itself.
