The title names a specific canyon, Black Cañon in the Humboldt Range of north-central Nevada, which sets this view apart from the survey's broader landscapes. It is plate 52 from the atlas of the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, the federal survey led by geologist Clarence King that mapped the region west of the Rockies in the late 1860s. The survey's photographers recorded such terrain so that geologists and the public could see the rock formations and the difficult country the expedition crossed. The albumen print preserves that documentary purpose.
