The title *Protecting Angels* heads a mazurka by J. DeJasienska, a Polish dance form that was popular in American parlor music of the 1860s. The cover was lithographed by Gregson, Donaldson & Elmes of Cincinnati, a city with a busy printmaking trade at the time, and the copyright was held by J.L. Peters. Around 1867, covers like this were meant to catch the eye in music shops and to suit the household piano, so the sentimental religious image reflects the tastes of middle-class buyers of that era.
