Despite its "photo print" label, this is a woodblock print, a medium Edo-period artists used to carry kabuki actors, teahouse beauties and city scenes to a wide public. A date around 1750 places it in the early decades of ukiyo-e, the "floating world" tradition, before full-color printing became common in the 1760s. Prints from this era were often printed in black ink and sometimes hand-colored, so the crisp line work and composition do much of the work. No artist is named, so the sheet is best appreciated for its design and its glimpse of urban Edo life.
