Few details survive in this record beyond its label as a Japanese ukiyo-e print, a term for the "floating world" genre of urban life, theater, and courtesans that flourished in Edo (now Tokyo). Woodblock prints like this were cheap, mass-produced images, and they were among the first Japanese art forms to reach Western collectors in the nineteenth century. The recorded date of 1750 falls before the full-color technique known as nishiki-e arrived around 1765, so the date is worth treating as approximate. Look closely at the bold outlines and flat areas of color, which show the handwork of carvers and printers.
