Dated 1750 in its record, this Japanese woodblock print comes from the Edo period, when ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world") was the popular form of urban art in Japan. Around that time, printmakers usually worked in a few colors or in black ink with hand coloring, since full-color printing did not become common until the mid-1760s. Its listing does not name a specific artist or scene, so the date and medium are the best guides to its age. Ukiyo-e prints of this era often showed courtesans, kabuki actors, and famous places, and they were made in large editions for ordinary buyers.
