The record dates this sheet to 1750, placing it in the early Edo period, when ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world," was taking shape in the entertainment districts of Edo, now Tokyo. Prints from this time were typically woodblocks inked in black and sometimes hand-tinted, since full multicolor printing did not appear until the 1760s. The record names no artist or specific subject, but prints of this era commonly showed actors, courtesans, and scenes of urban leisure.
