The second-floor plan of Widener Memorial Library at Harvard University shows how the building's interior was laid out for readers and book stacks. Widener was designed by the Boston firm Horace Trumbauer and opened in 1915 as a memorial to Harry Elkins Widener, a Harvard graduate who died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912. Plans like this one reveal the library's careful division of reading rooms, staircases and stack space, a balance of public and working areas that remains a useful record of early twentieth-century academic library design.
