The basement floor plan of the New York Public Library's Fifth Avenue building shows how much of the institution's working life took place below ground, in the stacks, storage rooms and service areas that supported the reading rooms above. Plans like this were drawn during the building's design and construction, when architects had to fit a large research library onto a dense Manhattan site. The library's main building opened in 1911 on Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street, and its underground spaces were essential to holding the collections that made it one of the country's major research libraries.
