A floor plan showing the terrace along Hope Street gives a rare look at how the Los Angeles Central Library was laid out for daily use, not just how its exterior looked. The building, designed by Bertram Goodhue with Carleton Winslow and opened in 1926, drew on Spanish and Mediterranean forms that became a model for civic architecture across Southern California. Plans like this one show how its public rooms, reading areas and outdoor spaces were arranged around the city's growing demand for books and study space. The building was badly damaged by fire in 1986 and reopened after a long restoration, which makes its original drawings especially useful for understanding what was there before.
