The caption identifies the subject as Hsuan-Tung, the Xuantong Emperor, labeled "Ex-Emp." of China, a title that places the sitter after the fall of the Qing dynasty. He was placed on the throne in 1908 as a young child, and after the 1911 revolution he abdicated in early 1912 but remained in the Forbidden City in Beijing for years under the terms of the settlement. Later he was known as Puyi, and his life drew wide international interest. The record gives no date for the negative, and the title comes from unverified Bain News Service data, so the exact moment of the photograph remains uncertain.
