Two rabbits push a wheelbarrow heaped with painted eggs, a whimsical scene that turns the holiday's most familiar symbols into a small piece of theater. The title, "Joyeuses Pâques," is French for "Happy Easter," a reminder that illustrated greeting cards like this one circulated widely in France and across Europe in the decades around 1900. Postcards of this kind were cheap, colorful and sent through the mail, so they doubled as both holiday messages and everyday decoration. Their playful anthropomorphic animals were a popular convention of the period, and this card shows why the form caught on.
