Here a girl in a bonnet cradles a rabbit beside a basket of painted eggs, a pairing that was a staple of French holiday postcards in the early 1900s. The card's greeting, "Joyeuses Pâques," means "Happy Easter," and cards like this were often mailed between friends and relatives as seasonal good wishes. Printed in bright chromolithography, these cards were produced in large numbers and were meant to be kept, traded, or pasted into albums. Look closely at the soft pastel colors and the gilt-like details, which show how commercial printers of the period aimed to make sentimental scenes of childhood feel warm and new each spring.
