An Easter postcard titled "Fröhliche Ostern," German for "Happy Easter," shows a girl standing beside a large rabbit, a figure that became the familiar bringer of Easter eggs in German-speaking countries. Cards like this were mass-produced in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when lithographic printing made colorful holiday greetings cheap enough to send through the post. Pictures of children with rabbits and eggs were especially popular, and they reflected the sentimental style of the era. Look closely at the printed greeting and the soft, decorative border, which tell you as much about the period's taste as about the holiday itself.
