Two rabbits sit side by side in a small boat, one holding the oars while the other rests among a heap of painted Easter eggs, a playful pairing that suits the French greeting "Heureuses Pâques" printed on this card. Illustrated postcards like this one were enormously popular in France and across Europe in the early twentieth century, when cheap color printing let publishers sell seasonal greetings by the dozen. Anthropomorphized animals dressed in human roles were a favorite device of the period, and the rabbit, long linked with spring fertility and the arrival of Easter eggs, was a natural choice. The card is worth noticing for its charmingly staged scene and its record of how holiday sentiment traveled through the mail.
