Few details survive for this glass negative beyond its title, "Marines depart," which the Bain News Service recorded on the negative or its caption card. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of current events, and George Grantham Bain's collection now at the Library of Congress holds tens of thousands of such images, many from the 1910s and early 1920s. Scenes of Marines departing were common in that era, when the Corps was often sent overseas and departures drew crowds and press attention. Because the date and location are unrecorded, the image is best read as a document of its period and of the agency's working practices.
