The caption on this glass negative names Muratore, most likely the French tenor Lucien Muratore, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified data on the negative or its caption card. Muratore was a popular singer in the years before the First World War, performing on opera stages in Paris and New York, and press pictures of performers were in steady demand. Bain News Service, the New York agency George Grantham Bain founded around 1899, sold such images to newspapers, so the negative was probably made for quick publication rather than as a studio portrait. Its small glass format is typical of that working collection.
