The title reads "Marines in Fr.," which most likely means Marines in France, though the record marks it as unverified and gives no date, so the exact scene is uncertain. The setting fits the American Expeditionary Forces of the First World War, when Marine units fought in France, most famously at Belleau Wood and Château-Thierry in the summer of 1918. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service that sold pictures to newspapers and magazines, so it was probably meant for quick publication rather than as a fine-art study.
