Little is recorded for this glass negative beyond its title, *Returning marines*, which the Library of Congress gives as unverified and taken from caption cards that came with the Bain News Service material. The Bain agency, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates were often made quickly to meet publication deadlines. Pictures of servicemen coming home were a staple of that work, recording homecomings that were as much public ceremony as private reunion. Readers should treat the title as a starting point rather than a settled fact.
