The poster's central image is a fist, a gesture that turns the threat of "the menace of the seas," meaning Germany's submarine campaign against Atlantic shipping, into something Americans could act against. Issued by the O'Connor-Fyffe advertising firm around 1918, this color lithograph was one of many Liberty Loan posters that urged civilians to finance the war by buying government bonds. Its bold color and blunt slogan reflect the wartime style of posters that were displayed in shop windows, public buildings, and other places where people gathered.
