Over the top" was soldiers' slang for climbing out of the trench to attack, and this 1918 lithograph borrows the phrase to speak to civilians at home. Designed by Halsted Frances Adams to promote the Third Liberty Loan, one of the government bond drives that helped pay for American participation in World War I, it presents buying bonds as a way of supporting the men at the front. Its pairing of a soldier with the American flag reflects the patriotic imagery common to wartime campaigns of this kind.
