Its title runs in German, French and English, a reminder that New Harmony on the Wabash drew settlers from several countries. The town on the Indiana bank of the Wabash River was founded in 1814 by the German-speaking Harmony Society and sold in 1825 to Robert Owen, the Welsh industrialist whose short-lived communal experiment brought it wide attention. The shelflist card links the print to the name Karl Bodmer, but that attribution is unverified and no date is recorded, so the image is best read as a view of the town from roughly its early decades.
