Its title, *5 to One Ha*, reads like a wager or a betting call, and the print pairs that quip with the U.S. Capitol, the national flag, and African American figures. W. Wiswell entered the image for copyright in Ohio on June 8, 1861, about two months after the Civil War began at Fort Sumter. Political cartoons from that spring often used the Capitol and the flag to comment on the Union cause, and slavery and the place of Black Americans in the conflict were central questions of the moment. The record gives few details about the scene itself, but the print is a useful example of how quickly cartoonists responded to events.
