This image reproduces a watercolor by John White of a woman identified in its original caption as one of the wives of Wyngyno, a name that points to the Algonquian-speaking community ruled by Wingina along the coast of present-day North Carolina. White made his drawings during the English colony's brief presence in Virginia in the mid-1580s, recording the clothing, body decoration, and daily customs of the people he met. The engraver Theodore de Bry later turned many of these drawings into prints for a 1590 publication, which helped shape how Europeans imagined Native life in the Americas. This photographic print is a mid-twentieth-century copy of the color reproduction that appeared in a 1965 edition of those pictures.
