The particular thing about this poster is that it advertises a stage production rather than a product or public notice: *Autumn Crocus*, a 1936 Los Angeles staging of a play by the English writer Dodie Smith, whose work was a popular choice for theater audiences of the era. The Federal theater Project, the New Deal program that kept theater workers employed during the Depression, sponsored the show, and its posters were produced through the Works Progress Administration's art program. Silkscreen was a practical method for those artists, since it allowed bright, flat color areas and inexpensive runs of many copies for display across town.
