Childhood is the spring panel of an allegorical sequence, and its title, The Four Seasons of Life, assigns each stage of a person's years to a season of the year. Series like this were popular in the nineteenth century, when printed images with moral and sentimental themes hung in parlors and were meant to be read as much as looked at. The spring association gives the scene its ideas of early growth, innocence and promise. Seen alongside the other seasons, it reads as one stage in a life rather than a standalone scene.
