A farmer in Arkansas, undaunted by a drought the previous year, readies his ground for another crop in this view. The drought of 1930 and 1931 hit much of the South hard, and the American National Red Cross provided relief to rural families whose harvests had failed and who needed seed, food, and help to keep working their land. The print is catalogued in the Red Cross disaster relief files, and its date appears in brackets, suggesting the archive could not confirm the exact year. The image shows how farm households tried to start over after a lost season.
