Seen from above, a wooded valley turns into a patchwork of red, orange and gold, with a highway cutting straight through the middle. Aerial views like this were once rare, and they came from balloons, where a photographer had to lean over the basket edge and work with the wind and the light. Ballooning gave early photographers a vantage no ground camera could reach, and images like this show how roads and forests shaped the land below. The view is worth a closer look for the way the highway's pale line stands out against the autumn canopy.
