A London pleasure ground in Chelsea is the setting for this poster, which announces ascents from Ashburnham Park on King's Road on May 1 and daily thereafter, weather permitting, from 1 to 7 o'clock. The notice boasts of a "new steam captive balloon," a tethered craft that rose on a cable so that passengers could look over the city without leaving the ground. The poster points back to the Universal Exhibition of 1867 in Paris, where a similar balloon had drawn large crowds, so it shows how quickly such novelties traveled from the fairground to the London public. The colored woodcut and bold letterpress were typical of the commercial posters of the 1860s and 1870s.
