Navy Secretary George von Lengerke Meyer and a woman named Claudia Lyon are the people named in this picture's title, which places them at the launch of the battleship Texas. The Texas was built at the Newport News shipyard in Virginia and launched in 1912, part of the early generation of big-gunned battleships that reshaped navy strength before World War I. Launches like this drew officials, sponsors and crowds to the yards. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs, documented many such events. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption data the agency supplied that has not been independently verified.
