This glass negative documents the launch of the Italian battleship *Giulio Cesare* at the Sestri Ponente shipyard near Genoa. The record spells the name "Giulie," an error likely introduced when the Bain News Service captioned the negative. Launched in 1910, the ship was one of Italy's first dreadnought-type battleships, built to keep pace with the naval race among the great powers before the First World War. Bain's wire-service photographers covered such ship launches for newspapers, so the picture offers a record of both the ceremony and the industrial work behind Italy's naval buildup.
