Brooklyn Navy Yard, the federal shipyard on the East River, is the setting named in this glass negative, which records an outdoor Mass held for sailors and yard workers. Open-air services like this were common at military installations, where a temporary altar and rows of uniformed men could gather outside rather than in a chapel. The negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title was recorded by the agency and has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion and date remain uncertain.
