A cut-down half plate daguerreotype, this view shows a village whose name went unrecorded, with a sailing ship visible in the distance beyond the buildings. The plate was made sometime between 1840 and 1860, the years when daguerreotypes were the dominant photographic process and travelers and studios produced thousands of such views of towns, harbors and street scenes. The photographer is unknown, and the case, a variant of a known Rinhart design, points to the mass-produced cases of the period. The picture was later purchased at a ranch auction in Switzerland in 1961 and is now held by the Library of Congress.
