Few American sporting grounds carry as much history as the Casino at Newport, Rhode Island, shown here in a wide panoramic view of its grounds around 1902. The club hosted the first U.S. National Championships in tennis in 1881, and its shingled clubhouse, designed by McKim, Mead & White, helped set the model for the American country club. The print was registered for copyright in August 1902 by B. J. Falk, and the deposit copy preserves the grounds as the summer colony of the Gilded Age knew them.
