Adams is the figure this print puts at its center: John Quincy Adams, the former president who had returned to Congress and became the most persistent voice against slavery in the House. The cartoon, titled *Abolition Frowned Down*, appeared in 1839, when Southern members were using the "gag rule" to table antislavery petitions without debate, and Adams repeatedly challenged that practice on the floor. Waddy Thompson, a South Carolina congressman also named in the record, represents the proslavery side of that clash. Lithographs like this one were a popular way for Americans to follow such fights, and the hand-applied watercolor makes it a useful example of how political prints were finished for sale.
