Few stage portraits tie New York's earliest history to the footlights as directly as this one, which presents the actor William H. Crane in the role of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch director-general of New Amsterdam. Stuyvesant governed the colony until he surrendered it to the English in 1664, and his stubborn temper and wooden leg made him a colorful subject for a character actor like Crane. As a theater poster, the sheet was built to draw audiences with a popular star's name and a figure New Yorkers already knew from the city's streets and monuments. The lettering and layout also show how theater advertising of the period was designed to sell a show.
