Hoyt's *A Stranger in New York* is a theater poster for a play by Charles Hale Hoyt, one of the most popular American comedy writers of the 1880s and 1890s. His farces often turned on the city itself, with small-town visitors and newcomers bewildered by its crowds, money and manners. Posters like this one were usually large colored lithographs designed to catch the eye of passersby on busy streets, so the bold lettering and eye-catching art were as much the point as the cast list. Such bills show how the city's theater district advertised itself to both residents and out-of-towners.
