Few stage figures are as tied to New York's origins as Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch director-general of New Netherland, who governed the colony until the English took New Amsterdam in 1664. This poster advertises William H. Crane in the title role of a play built around that governor. Crane was one of the best-known American character actors of his era, and vehicles like this one brought the city's colonial past to audiences in a popular, entertaining form. Theatrical posters of the period were typically bold color lithographs, designed to catch the eye on crowded city streets.
