What sets this drawing apart is its inscription: John T. McCutcheon signed it "To President Roosevelt, with my compliments," so it was a personal gift as well as a newspaper cartoon. It was published in the *Chicago Tribune* on November 10, 1904, two days after the presidential election that returned Theodore Roosevelt to office. Its title, "The mysterious stranger," is the only other clue the record offers about its subject. McCutcheon, who worked for the *Tribune* for decades, was one of the most widely read political cartoonists of his era, and his work from this period shows how newspaper cartoons commented on national politics in ink.
