Few pictures from 1789 name their victims as plainly as this one, which pairs Bernard-René Jourdan de Launay, governor of the Bastille, with Jacques de Flesselles, the provost of the Paris merchants. Both were killed by crowds on 14 July 1789, during the storming of the Bastille, when angry Parisians seized and executed officials they believed had betrayed the city. The title, roughly "This is how one takes revenge on traitors," presents the killings as retribution rather than murder, a stance many engravings of the early Revolution took. Its combined mezzotint and engraving was typical of the inexpensive commentary prints sold in Paris during those years.
