This 1935 color lithograph promotes the joint passage offered by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique steamship line and the PLM railway, the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée system, to Algiers. The combined ticket let travelers ride the train south to Marseille and cross the Mediterranean by ship, a common route to colonial Algeria in the interwar years. Travel posters like this one were meant to be seen at railway stations and shipping offices, so they relied on bold shapes and flat color to catch the eye of passersby. The subject is ships, and the design shows how transport companies used the image of the vessel to sell both sea travel and the wider journey.
