Few early photographers are honored with a monument in the nation's capital, but this glass negative records a memorial to Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, the French painter whose 1839 announcement of the daguerreotype helped launch practical photography. The National Photo Company made the negative around 1918 to 1920, when it was documenting Washington's streets and monuments. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings and give the image its worn, textured character.
