Fall Creek Falls, in Van Buren County, Tennessee, drops roughly 256 feet into a rugged gorge, making it one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. This 1878 stereograph card holds a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which merged them into a single image with apparent depth. Stereo cards like this were a popular parlor entertainment in the late nineteenth century, and scenic places in the South drew many views as travel became easier after the Civil War. The card was registered for copyright and later belonged to collector Marian S. Carson.
