Margalo Gillmore was an American stage actress, and this glass negative is one of the many portraits that the Bain News Service made of theater people in New York in the early twentieth century. Gillmore built a career on Broadway and later in films, appearing in plays by major writers of her day. The Bain Collection as a whole holds more than 30,000 negatives, many taken for newspapers that wanted quick images of celebrities, politicians and newsworthy events. The record gives no date for this portrait, so its exact year is unknown, but the glass plate format and the studio-style work place it in the period when the agency was most active.
