Its title points to one of the state prisons called the Western Penitentiary, most likely the Pennsylvania institution near Pittsburgh that opened in the 1820s under the early penitentiary reforms. The record's title comes from unverified notes on the negative, so the exact site is not confirmed. The picture is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency founded by George Grantham Bain, which supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Such images often record the stone walls, cell blocks and yards that defined American prison architecture of the period.
