The title on this glass negative, Peggy Mathews, comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded on its negatives or caption cards, and the library has not verified it, so the sitter's identity remains uncertain. Founded in New York by George Grantham Bain around the turn of the twentieth century, the agency supplied news pictures to newspapers, and its glass plates were the working medium of press photography before film became standard. The record gives no date, but the glass format and the agency's commercial purpose place the picture in the early decades of the 1900s, when newspapers depended on such images to show readers the people in the news.
