The sitter is known only as Jessie Reed, a name taken from the negative or its caption card, and the record notes that the identification has not been verified. The Bain News Service, a New York agency, supplied news and feature photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its images were made on glass plates that were filed and captioned for reuse. The plate's missing date and firm identification make it a reminder of how many portraits in the collection survive with only partial context.
