George Grantham Bain's news service made this glass negative, and its record names the sitter as Hope Hampton, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified data written on the negative or its caption card. Hampton was a stage and silent-film actress who rose to fame in the 1910s and 1920s, and Bain's staff photographed many performers of that era for newspapers and magazines that wanted quick, recognizable portraits of celebrities. Glass plates like this one were the standard working medium for press photographers of the period, so the image also reflects the technical habits of early news photography.
